SolidWorks Tech Tip: Dimensioning with quadrant snapping

Users who have recently adopted Solidworks are sometimes at an advantage over their more experienced associates. For example, when it comes to adopting new techniques made available by recent enhancements to the user interface, the novice has nothing to "un-learn" and adopts the newer technique, while the veteran user may have ingrained work habits that prevent him from discovering the improvements.

Such is the case with laying a simple Dimension between a pair of circles. In earlier versions of Solidworks, every dimension you placed between two circles would appear first as a center-to-center dimension. If you really wanted the dimension to be between quadrants of the circle, (for example, the maximum overall distance, as in the illustration), you had to go through several extra clicks to get this result. In the 2005 and 2006 versions of Solidworks, however, this has been greatly streamlined. All you need to do is hold down the SHIFT key, as you select the appropriate quandrant of each circle, and you will get the overall dimension right away. (Your selection "click" on the periphery of each circle must be within +/-15 degrees of the desired location, for the quadrant snapping to work).
