CAP Engineering Manager Wins SolidWorks Model Mania Challenge
Our very own Jason Pancoast took first place in the annual "Model Mania" design contest at the SolidWorks World Annual International User Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pancoast correctly completed the solid modeling challenge in the fastest time and accepted his award in front of 3,700 attendees from around the globe.
The Model Mania competition tested participants to determine the contestant who could accurately model a component in the shortest period of time. Contestants were given a 2D drawing from which a 3D model must be created using SolidWorks® software. The contest gauges the user's knowledge of not only SolidWorks functionality, but also his/her ability to apply design intent to a model. After the participant is finished creating the model, a surprise design change must be completed before the final time is recorded. SolidWorks Model Mania

"Can you spark a gasoline fire with a cell phone? Is yawning contagious? Can Pop Rocks and soda be a lethal combination?" “MythBusters” Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, who answer questions like these for a living on their weekly Discovery Channel TV show, made a surprise appearance at SolidWorks World 2006, using SolidWorks CAD software integrated with COSMOS analysis capabilities to illustrate the facts behind the myths they bust every week. The duo kicked off the annual conference in front of more than 3,700 SolidWorks users at Caesars Palace.
SolidWorks Corporation has announced the release of 64-bit versions of SolidWorks and COSMOSWorks design analysis software, enabling engineers to work more efficiently than ever with very large assemblies. SolidWorks Tech Tip: Select Subassembly
(This month's tech tip comes courtesy of Melissa S. (CSWP) of EMC, a CAP customer in Massachusetts. Thank you, Melissa!)
At every annual SolidWorks World event, SolidWorks conducts a special survey to determine the Top Ten Enhancement Requests of the attendees. So far, 90% of the requests from previous conventions have been implemented! The #3 Top Enhancement Request at SolidWorks World 2006 was to allow a user to right-click on a component in an assembly and have the option to select the subassembly that owns that component. Melissa writes to us to let us know that this is already possible!
Here is the technique:
1. With an assembly open in SolidWorks, right-click a component that belongs to the subassembly you want.
2. Choose "Parent/Child" from the pop-up menu.
3. In the Parent/Child dialog box, select the topmost icon in the parent window and you are selecting the component's parent assembly, even though the icon shows the name of the component itself.
Bonus: In the Parent window, you can also right-click on the component's name and you will see several options such as Open Assembly, Open Drawing, Edit Subassembly, Dissolve Subassembly. All of these commands act on the component's parent assembly.
Bonus bonus: Also on that same right-click menu is "Parent/Child", so you can repeat the process and get options for the next-higher subassembly in the tree.
Caution! The only thing to be wary of is that the name and icon represented in the Parent/Child dialog shows the initial object selected and not necessarily the name and icon of the parent.
