The December meeting topic will be “Top Down Design”, a modeling/design technique that allows you to control your models (parts & assemblies) through the use of “master” (or layout) sketches.  All parts are created within the context of the assembly and therefore update automatically when changes are made.  The top down design method is a very powerful model/design tool.  Presented by Keith Pedersen from Computer Aided Products. Keith will definitely deliver the most interesting and informative 90 minutes of CAD talk you’ve heard in a while.

December 15th 6:00-9:00 PM at the Waterbury Best Western Hotel and Conference Center.

Hot Tech Tips
SolidWorks Tech Tip: Honeycomb Pattern
SolidWorks 2006 adds a new Pattern feature called a Fill Pattern. This new feature can be used to quickly create a honeycomb-like series of cuts like those used for weight-savings in many designs.

From the pull-down menus, choose Insert - Pattern - Fill Pattern.
Select a (planar) face of the model where you want the honeycomb cutouts to be created. This is the Fill Boundary.

In the Fill Pattern PropertyManager, set the instance spacing to: The size of the honeycomb cell (the distance across the flats of a hexagon) PLUS the width of material that you want to remain between two hexagonal cells (for example, 0.500 + 0.125 = 0.625).

If necessary, select a straight edge or sketch line to describe the direction of the honeycomb pattern (the software may auto-select one).

Next, in the same PropertyManager, choose "Create seed cut" for Features to Pattern. Select the rightmost icon that appears, to create Polygons. Set the number of sides to six (6). Set the INNER radius equal to: Half the distance across the flats of the desired hexagon (for example, 0.500 / 2 = 0.250). Set the angle of the polygon to 30 degrees.

You can see in the preview, and when you click the OK checkmark, SolidWorks automatically creates hexagonal cuts arranged in a honeycomb pattern, with the desired wall thickness between them!

Optionally, you also can define a margin size to decrease the area where the honeycomb pattern is generated.
