A leader in the printing industry for 30 years, Braintree Printing is now breaking into the 3D printing world. Located in the South Shore of Massachusetts, Braintree Printing is run by Co-Owners Jim Corliss and Jose Tafur, and President Jerry Hogan. With 31 employees, they sell to the printing trade in New England and New York State, specializing in offset and digital printing, and now offering 3D printing.
With their typical customer base of print brokers and other printers, Braintree Printing was interested in expanding their printing offerings. Co-Owner Jim Corliss described how 3D printing naturally piqued their interest:
“There has been tremendous amount of talk about 3D printing. You can’t look at a publication or barely turn on the TV without seeing something about 3D printing. There’s a lot of interest in it in general. We’ve always kind of looked around for other services that we can offer, other revenue sources. We thought 3D printing might be kind of a natural for us. I think most 3D printing equipment is sold to engineering firms, design firms. So we’re coming at it from a little bit of a different angle.”
As leaders in the printing industry, the Braintree Printing team is very comfortable with all forms and sizes of digital files, having a well-established network and servers and a variety of expertise on staff. Jim explained how 3D printing seemed to be an instinctive service to start providing.
“In that respect it’s a natural. We’re not daunted by the 3D technology, really it’s no big deal for us. One of my guys said when we got the equipment in ‘hey it’s just another printer’. And that’s the way we look at it. We’re just ripping a file to another device. It’s no big leap for us.”
After researching types of 3D printers and materials, Jim and his team chose fused deposition modeling (FDM) because it printed parts that can be used in physical testing and has a higher level of accuracy of fitting together. Working with CAPINC, Braintree Printing decided on the Stratasys Dimension 1200 printer. The office friendly 3D printer provides them with the ability to print large, functional 3D models with a larger build size. The Dimension 1200 uses tough ABSplus Thermoplastic which can be drilled, sanded, painted or finished however their customers need. The ease of operation made training on the machine simple for the team.
When Braintree Printing got their Dimension 3D printer, they were printing within two hours. Because they have pre-press functions already in place, linking a 3D printer to their pre-press operation was rather natural. Since then, customers have been very pleased with their parts and how deadline-oriented they are.
“We’re very comfortable doing things same day, next day, two days. That doesn’t intimidate us at all, so when people call us about 3D project we have that mindset; we’re ready to put that in production in basically minutes. So you send us a file and in an hour it’s in production. And we do run 24/7 so we’re running it through the night and delivering it the next day or day after.”
Deadlines are everything to printers. CAPINC worked with the Braintree Printing team’s busy schedule, meeting them even on a Sunday morning, to help implement their new machine. Because of that, Braintree Printing truly is where customers from the greater Boston region go to expect the highest level of service, technical expertise and the very best quality digital and offset printing available, and now 3D printing!
